mild climate presents Corner Palace, a group exhibition that explores spatial and personal intimacies, featuring work from Bridget Bailey, Douglas Degges, and John Ames Dickinson.
“...a suppleness so miraculous that the image can be said to represent the sum of the direction that enlarges and the direction that concentrates. The poet keeps the image from becoming motionless…When we examine images of immenseness, tiny and immense are compatible. A poet is always ready to see large and small...If a poet looks through a microscope or a telescope, [they] always see the same thing.”
- Gaston Bachelard, “Miniatures,” from The Poetics of Space
Corner Palace brings together works that look at the grandeur of the mundane using shifts in scale and extraction from everyday environments. A palace, as ones special dwelling, has the potential to be both expansive and tightly personal, holding more in its many surfaces and zones than can be perceived at first sight. Dickinson’s warped architectural models, reconfigured in contorted silicone and reduced to an approachable scale, exist as much as personal vessels as they do psychospatial memory maps. Bailey’s shrunken clay delicates, fluidly molded as garments strewn across a bedroom floor, are constructed with a playful reflection as though the product of daydreams. Degges presents sighted encounters from the verge of perception: scrawlings, nicks, etchings, dents, burnishings, carvings, and edges from tabletops and infrastructural surfaces that only fingertips can truly decipher. Each artist in their own varied practice investigates the dynamics of an object-driven spatiality, both mental and physical, universal and hyper-personal, inviting the projection of ones own experiences onto the works.
